Homemade is Money Saved: Bread

By:   Allrecipes Staff

Why spend money on store-bought bread when you can make your own at home for a fraction of the price?

These homemade breads taste just like, if not better, than versions you would find in the bread aisle at your local grocery store. But don't take our word for it--check out the rave reviews from Allrecipes Community Members!

Honey Wheat Sandwich Rolls

Rave Review: "This is an awesome recipe! I followed the recipe, but instead of rolling out the dough I rolled small amounts with floured hands and placed the dough balls on the baking stone. I let them rise for an hour and baked at 325 degrees for 15 minutes. Came out great! I made these rolls as a protest to the increased bread prices. My family loves these rolls and we use them for all sandwiches. Thanks so much!"

Honey Wheat Bread I

Rave Review: "I'm in my eighth month now of making my own yeast breads. For a sandwich bread, this is hands down the best recipe I have tried out of about eight or nine now. As others recommended, I subbed olive oil for the shortening. I also threw in about two tablespoons of wheat bran. It was pretty easy to make, but like most yeast breads, time consuming. But so worth it. Delicious. Husband, who always likes my breads but has recently confessed to missing Wonder Bread (or whatever brand) around, says that's no longer an issue. This bread is perfect for sandwiches and toast. Tastes great. Excellent texture. My compliments and gratitude to the person who shared this wonderful recipe with us."

Honey Whole Wheat Bread

Rave Review: "With rising food costs, I've begun making our bread instead of buying it and this is now our staple bread. I also took other reviewers advice and used two cups whole wheat and one cup bread flour, used one teaspoon of salt, and two tablespoons of melted butter instead of the oil. I use one quarter of a cup of agave syrup instead of honey because it has a lower glycemic index. Works great in our bread machine and the hubby and I can't resist a slice or two as soon as it comes out."

Whole Wheat Beer Bread

Rave Review: "Ha! And I always thought I needed a bread machine to make bread! This is my new favorite recipe and I can't wait to make it again. I followed the recipe to a T, used a can of Budweiser, and it turned out fantastic. I can already tell that I'm going to save a fortune on bread (good rolls cost 50 cents apiece at the grocery store!). My next mission is to figure out how to get it a bit less crumbly so I can use it with sandwiches. Thanks so much for this recipe!!"
